چکیده

The effectiveness of poisoning feral goats (Capra hircus L.) with Compound 1080 on natural vegetation baits was tested and compared with a hunting campaign. Both control methods probably killed over 90% of the goats in treatment blocks of 1200 ha, but the poisoning method required less skill than hunting. Melicytus ramiflorus Forst., Schefflera digitata J.R. et G. Forst., Coprosma lucida J.R. et G. Forst, and C. australis (A. Rich.) Robinson proved to be useful bait species in terms of their palatability and durability. The Compound 1080 gei used in the trial was too acid, causing chlorosis and eventual abscission of treated leaves.

Using Bioeconomic Models to Maximize Benefits from Vertebrate Pest Control: Lamb Predation by Feral Pigs

The question “When should investment in pest control stop?” either explicitly or implicitly underpins decisions concerning pest control made at every level of enterprise or government, regardless of whether these decisions are tactical or strategic. Bioeconomic modeling provides a quantitative framework for considering the benefits and costs of alternative pest control strategies. In this case ...

Aerial Prefeeding Followed by Ground Based Toxic Baiting for More Efficient and Acceptable Poisoning of Invasive Small Mammalian Pests

Introduced brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rat species (Rattus spp.) are major vertebrate pests in New Zealand, with impacts on conservation and agriculture being managed largely through poisoning operations. Aerial distribution of baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) has been refined to maximise cost effectiveness and minimise environmental impact, but this method is stro...

Changes in a Feral Pig Population after Poisoning

The changes in a feral pig population associated with 1080 poisoning were examined. There was a 58.1% reduction in population size after poisoning with no age-specific effect. The population size increased over 11.5 months after poisoning at an observed instantaneous rate of increase per year of 0.57. The results are discussed relative to feral pig control. INTRODUCTION Pigs (Sus scrofa) were i...

An assessment of the probability of secondary poisoning of forest insectivores following an aer ial 1080 possum control operation

Assays for the toxin sodium monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) were undertaken on arthropods collected from toxic baits after a brushtail possum (Trichosorus vulpecula) control operation in Nothofagus forest in central North Island, New Zealand. The 1080 concentrations measured (mean 57 μg g, max 130 μg g) are considerably higher than those reported by other researchers who collected arthropods ...

Toxic Bait and Baiting Strategies for Feral Cats

To improve feral cat control we developed a dry pelleted toxic bait and evaluated the potential of lures. A polymer fish meal bait was preferred by cats from a range of bait types tested. L-alanine further increased bait acceptance by cats in pen trials and catnip may have the potential to increase field acceptance and target specificity. An oral LD90 of 0.38 mg/ kg was established for sodium m...
